A lot of little experiments, a few long term endeavors
Experiments, explorations, and weekend hacks fuel the impulse to dabble and keep me feeling light and refreshed. They keep me flexible and in tune with the culture and the currents of inspiration.
Long term projects, lifelong endeavors, ventures, and disciplined pursuits cultivate quality, taste, craft, iterative beauty, and compounding returns. They keep me focused, refine my skills, bring me joy and a clear sense of self, and build a meaningful body of work.
I feel best when I do both of these things: experiment and endeavor.
Advice to self:
Be very careful when promoting a little experiment to a long term project. This will happen organically when it ought to happen. That development should feel like “it couldn’t have been otherwise”. “I couldn’t have helped but kept working on it”. Let the ideas behind the experiments steep in the unconscious over innumerable morning showers, evening walks, and twilight dreams before bubbling up into long term endeavors.
